Strengthening the St James

Wellington City Council (WCC) will close St James Theatre from April 2018 - September 2019 for strengthening work to make it more resilient to future seismic activity.

When is the St James Theatre closing?

The scheduled dates for closure are between April 2018 – September 2019.

Why is the St James Theatre closing?

As the owners of the St James Theatre, Wellington City Council (WCC) is strengthening the building to make it more resilient to future seismic activity. This building work will be extensive, and WREDA won’t be able to operate the St James Theatre as venue while its being completed.

What’s happening to events that were due to be in the St James Theatre ?

We’ve had a good length of time to plan for this, and have worked with our clients to, where possible, place affected bookings into other venues in our portfolio, or elsewhere in Wellington

What about the Mojo Café on the ground floor?

Mojo will be closed until work is completed.

And the other tenants, the Ballet, the NZ Festival?

Their tenancies are managed by WCC as the landlord. The Royal New Zealand Ballet will be moving to a temporary building on the Michael Fowler Centre carpark.
